PHC Audiologist: Abi Michels, Au.D.
Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Baldwin City, Kansas. The small community is located about 45 minutes southwest of Kansas City and is home to the Maple Leaf festival and Baker University.
Where did you go to school?
I graduated from Baldwin City High School. I received my Bachelor of Arts at the University of Kansas. I went to graduate school at the University of Kansas Medical Center and graduated with my Doctorate of Audiology in 2020. Why did you want to become an audiologist?
I have always had a desire to help people. I knew I wanted to work in the health professions but did not want anything to do with blood or other bodily fluids (except earwax I guess!). I did not know audiology was a profession until college, and was drawn to it through personal experiences and great professors. What is your favorite area of audiology?
My favorite part of audiology is the counselling aspect. I enjoy working with patients to set and achieve communication goals. Every patient is unique, and it is rewarding to customize treatment plans and see the outcomes. At what office(s) do you work?
I work at the Lakewood office in Lee’s Summit, Lee’s Summit Medical Center, and the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton, Missouri. Now some fun questions! What’s your favorite television show?
Hmm, that’s a tough one. It’s a five way tie between Twin Peaks, Gossip Girl, Law and Order, Gilmore Girls, and the Office. If you could bring back any fashion trend, what would it be?
Crocs! They are comfortable and waterproof, what more could you ask for? I still wear my lime green crocs from 7th grade (they are at least 15 years old).
If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?
I would be on a beach, possibly on the Spanish or Greek coast.
