Choosing the Right Hearing Protection

By Lynsey Ralston, Au.D., CCC-A, F/AAA

A definite way to preserve hearing when exposed to loud noise is utilizing appropriate hearing protection. There are several types of hearing protection, but not all are created equal in every environment.

1. Ear muffs - This over the ear style of protection comes in several shapes and sizes, requires the least amount of proper training for use, and does not need to be placed inside the ear canal. They even make earmuffs for babies! Check out Baby Banz for more details. Earmuffs can be uncomfortable depending on the size and shape of the head, but must be worn tight to achieve necessary noise reduction.

2. Ear plugs - This type is typically placed inside the ear canal for a more sleek, low profile option for hearing protection. Ear plugs come in different types of material such as foam, silicone putty, or plastic. These are often used as a disposable option and can be intended for single use. They can have the highest noise reduction rating (NRR); however, they MUST be inserted properly to achieve the noise reduction. They can be very comfortable depending on the size and shape of the ear canal. These typically come in standard sizes, but can be made to be custom fit for any ear canal if needed.

3. Filtered Earplugs - Also known as musicians earplugs, filtered earplugs can be custom or standard fit. These types have various amounts of noise reduction depending on the input level as well as the frequency of noise. They can be helpful when attending live music events as they can help filter out the harmful noise levels while still allowing conversational noise to pass through. Custom fit filtered ear plugs can be ordered with various filter options based on the needs of the listener.

4. Electronic Hearing Protection - Typically used for hunting or competition shooting, electronic hearing protection actively reduces spontaneous loud noises while enhancing quiet sounds for situational awareness. These types may also be programmed with various modes for a variety of shooting environments.
